Last 8th Grade Post

Hey guys. This is my last blog post (unless I happen to blog about my summer). So today the prompt is what 8 lessons to get through 8th Grade. (these are not in order)

1) Don't stress to much: this is something that I did a lot throughout my eighth grade and it definitely did not help.

2) Get enough sleep: when you get overtired it is hard to focus

3) Eat the right foods: always eat breakfast and other foods throughout the day. (bring food to school!)

4) Study: Always be prepared for tests and projects

5) Be Kind and Understanding: Everyone is going through their own battles, and you need to be kind to everyone.

6) Be prepared: come to school prepared and make sure you have all your assigned homework completed. (not all teachers are understanding about it)

7) Appreciate you parents: Even though you may get in disagreements with them, they are the most important people in your life.

8) Have a good attitude (at Pali): having a good attitude is important because it affects others around you.

This will probably be my last post so I want to thank everyone for reading my blog! xoxo ella <3

My Night Essay

This is the first paragraph of my Night Essay. Let me know what you guys think!
(keep in mind this is a VERY rough draft)

In The Last Book in the Universe by Rodman Philbrick follows Spaz, a teenage boy who lives in a dystopian universe, who received a letter from his foster family telling him that his step-sister Bean has been diagnosed with Leukemia. Spaz decides to travel several hundred miles to get to her in hopes that they can find a cure. In The Glory Field by Walter Dean Myers follows Elijah, an African-American boy, who has to overcome inequality and prejudice. Night by Elie Wiesel is an autobiography about his life during World War II. These three characters demonstrate immense bravery different ways. As seen in Spaz, Elijah, and Elie’s stories, bravery can help transform the world for the better.

Changing The World

Hey guys! This weeks prompt is 'What innovation has most transformed the world? Why?'.

There are so many inventions that have made out world a better place. Millions of years ago fire was discovered and helped people stay alive. But more recently iPhones and computers have been created.

People have argued that technology has corrupted out world. I some what agree, but it is also one of the greatest inventions ever. One of the things it has helped is Education. Schooling has improved immensely since technology became a thing. Before technology was created students had to sit in classrooms and have a teacher lecture, which studies have shown isn't the best way to learn. Now we have more interactive class activities using smart boards or iPads.

The Progressive Era

Hey guys! This time I am going to be talking about issues from the Progressive Era. There are many problems in the world, but I am only going to talk about a few.

Women's Rights are a very important issue, not only today but long ago as well. During the 1890s women were not treated the same as men. Men got payed more, were treated better, and often got better opportunities then women.

Back in the 1900s FDA Regulations did not exist. No one new it but, people were eating gross things. Most of the time, there were disgusting and horrible stuff that got mashed up in their food. The streets were filled with sewage and dead carcass's and that often times got mixed in with their food. That was when the FDA was created.

In the 1890s people didn't even think twice about the Environment. As I said in the paragraph above, the streets were filled with sewage and trash. There was so much pollution happening because of the huge factories and businesses. Today people are much more considerate of the environment, however I think we still have a long way to go!

Stop Bullying

What is it you hope to transform in the world? Why?

What I want to change is the world is stop bullying. I want to teach people to not be bystanders but to be up standers. When you see bullying going on, do something about it. Bullying normally happens when people feel bad about themselves, so they want to make someone else hurt to make themselves feel better. That is where I would start. Helping those who don't have much self confidence, believe in themselves. I feel that this would greatly improve the bullying situation.

There are different levels of bullying. Wether it be making fun of something someone is wearing or seriously threatening someones life, every case of bullying matters to me and we will fix it.

Courage

Who is the most courageous person/people I know? Why?

I think the most courageous people I know would be my mom's dad and his family. My grandpa had seven brothers and one sister, which must have made migrating extremely hard. The reason I think that they are a really courageous family is because when they left Holland to come to the United States, they were leaving behind their flower business. Even though they were planning on starting a new one here in the states it would have to have been very complicated and stressful not knowing what was lying ahead.

I'm A Civil War Woman

Hey Readers! Today I am going to be writing in the perspective of a Union woman who is writing to her husband. :)

Dear Alexander,

I hope you and the rest of the Union Soldiers are doing well. I just wanted to send you some mail to
remind you of home. I cannot wait until your return in a few months. Although I miss you dearly, it

has been fun having all by myself. Since you and all the men have been away fighting against slavery,
all the women have been taking on the jobs that the men used to do and much more. The women

have finally been allowed to work in factories, as nurses and teachers, and as government workers! I am sorry, but I have to go take care of the children and the farm now. Below, I added a photograph for you to look at.
Take care.

Love,
Elizabeth

Justice

Todays blog prompt is What Factors Aid Justice and What Factors Impede Justice?

Impede Justice: Something that definitely impedes on justice is Racism. Even though racism has

greatly improved since the old days, we still need to fix it completely. Bullying is something that impedes as justice as well.

Aid Justice: Factors that aid justice are how we act towards each other and wether we make good

choices or not.

A Witness?

Hi! This past Wednesday my eighth grade class went to LA and visited The Museum of Tolerance and The Japanese American National Museum.

The Museum of Tolerance is all about the Holocaust. We learned about what the Nazis did to the people in Germany and how the Jews survived it. One of the most important words that kept coming up was witness. To me, a witness would be watching something happening and not do anything about it. During the Holocaust there were some bystanders and witnesses that just watched what was happening.

The Japanese American National Museum was all about the Japanese who were put into concentration camps after The Pearl Harbor bombing and stayed there several years after the war.

When I went to LA I learned so much about how hard life was for these survivors and it really changed my view on life.

my life capsule

In History class we are writing essay's about important people in History and as part of the assignment we have
to come up with items that would represent our person and put them in a time capsule! Now I'm going to talk
about what I would put in a time capsule to represent myself.

Family / Childhood: As a child I was very happy and creative. I loved reading and anything to do with art. So in my time capsule I would put one of my favorite books and piece of art that I painted.

Heritage / Culture: I have a HUGE family. My grandpa has 7 brothers and a sister, so I would put a photograph of all of them in Holland in front of their flower business.

Accomplishments / Achievements: I think one of my bets accomplishments was after training for the Carpinteria orchard to ocean 3k run. I finished in under 35 minutes and made top three out of the 11 to 18 age group (I was 12) Another one of my best accomplishments was when I got an A on my Grammar Final in 6th Grade.

Legacy Left Behind: I am basically a kind person and I hope that people feel the same way. I want to be remembered as a funny, sweet, and lovable person so I would put a candy heart inside my capsule.

And all of these things would go inside of a treasure box because who doesn't like finding treasure!

Me as a Motif

Today I will be writing about how animals have effected my life. In The Glory Field we are tracking the motif of animals, like birds, dogs, and horses.
Those three animals have a strong impact in my life and in the Glory Field.

Birds that are in my life are owls. Not only are they my school mascot, but they are a big part of my outside life and where I live. However, owls are not the only type of bird in my life. I am a photographer so birds are something that I can capture in the moment.

My family and I are very big animal lovers and we have many animals. I have four dogs which have helped shaped who I am today. They have taught me how to be responsible and caring even more than you would know.
However, in the Glory Field dogs aren't a happy thing like in my life. Dogs were helping the white people to capture the runaway blacks, so most of the Glory Field Characters had a negative experience with dogs.

Horses are another animal that have made an impact on my life. I started horseback riding when I was 10 and a few years ago I got my own horse, Sunny. Like dogs, my horse has taught me how to be responsible.
